Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) frequently markets the environmental benefits of public transportation in media interviews, press releases and advertising, both in the media and on posters placed on transit vehicles and property. For example, in March 2006, Miami-Dade Transit participated in the County's celebrations of International Earth Day by issuing press releases, engaging in media interviews and placing newspaper ads that touted public transportation's benefits in terms of conserving energy, reducing greenhouse emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment. Included in the newspaper ad was a free ride coupon that asked people to "be green" by trying transit.
MDT is also a key player in helping the County meet its targets for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. (Since 2007, the County has been a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange.) The department is in the process of converting its bus fleet to more fuel-efficient hybrid-electric buses. In addition, MDT is testing the use of biodiesel in its buses to further reduce its carbon footprint. MDT hopes to begin using a biodiesel blend in its buses late this year. To ensure no negative impact on service, MDT will begin with a 5 percent biodiesel blend and gradually increase the percentage of biodiesel to 20 percent sometime in 2009. Switching to a 20 percent biodiesel blend will reduce MDT’s use of fossil fuels by about 2.4 million gallons per year. MDT invited the media to its bus maintenance facility on April 17, 2008 to see engineers from West Virginia University test two different types of biodiesel on an MDT bus using a dynamometer, and MDT representatives explained the benefits of biodiesel in terms of reducing global warming.
LYNX is currently working on a “Green Fact Sheet” which will highlight the environmental benefits of public transportation, particularly vanpooling and carpooling. Also, we will be converting our entire fleet to run on a bio-diesel fuel blend in 2009 thanks to a grant from the state of Florida.
Palm Tran will be participating in a regional marketing effort in coordination with Broward County Transit, Tri-Rail, Miami-Dade Transit, South Florida Commuter Services and FDOT. The campaign will promote the use of public transportation as a viable alternative to paying high gas prices and as a way to help the environment. When Palm Tran implemented the use of bio-diesel fuel and nitrogen filled tires, we did a full bus wrap to promote the change. We also did an ad for Earth Day, promoting our ‘green’ initiatives, and hosted a celebration of “Going Green” which was attended by Florida’s Governor Charlie Crist and Congressmen Ron Klein and Tim Mahoney.
